Why CDA trees need local knowledge

Tree work in Coeur d’Alene isn’t the same job it is elsewhere. Our second-growth ponderosa stands are a preferred target for western and mountain pine beetle, and root disease is quietly at work under more than 8 million acres of northern Idaho forest — weakening Douglas-fir and grand fir long before anything looks wrong above ground. A root-compromised fir that sailed through ten winters can come down in the eleventh. That’s exactly what the December 2025 windstorm proved, when gusts near 70 mph — among the strongest ever recorded at the Coeur d’Alene Airport — toppled trees across the county onto homes, lines, and vehicles, with saturated ground pulling whole root plates out of lawns.

Knowing which trees are genuinely hazardous — and which just look scary — is the difference between spending $800 once and spending $2,500 after the damage is done.

What we do

Tree Removal. Hazard trees, beetle-killed pines, storm casualties, and trees that have simply outgrown their lot. Small trees typically run $300–800, mid-size $800–1,500, and large removals $1,500–2,500+ in the CDA area.

Tree Trimming & Pruning. Crown thinning to reduce wind sail, deadwood removal, and clearance pruning over roofs and driveways.

Stump Grinding. Finish the job — reclaim the lawn after a removal. Typically $150–400 by stump diameter.

Storm & Emergency Response. When the wind comes down the Rathdrum Prairie, crews prioritize trees on structures and blocked access.

Worth knowing: the City may split your bill

If the tree in question stands in a public right-of-way, the City of Coeur d’Alene’s Urban Forestry cost-share program reimburses 50% of the cost — up to $200 for pruning and up to $600 for removal.
